The Status Update

Take a feeling, break it up, reduce it,
Translate it into text, or an image, or a sound.
Micro pieces of your Self, of the Body,
Floating around in cyberspace.
This cyberspace, you can always dip in and out,
Seems to have something going on there,
People are always around.

Take a feeling, break it up, reduce it,
Translate it into text, or an image, or a sound.
Where are you now?
Here or there?
Do you carry parts of her around with you in your head?
How often do you think of her? She’s at a safe distance now, coming and going through the machine. You miss her don’t you? She abandoned you and found a replacement. You overwhelmed her!

Take a feeling, break it up, reduce it,
Translate it into text, or an image, or a sound.
Once there were present meetings, and the events produced memories.
Now memories are produced without any presence at all!
Drawing on the pastiche of text, image, sound.
The replacement is never satisfying, a negative of a celluloid film.
She wants to make new memories with you in the present tense.

Take a feeling, break it up, reduce it,
Translate it into text, or an image, or a sound.
Hey, but that photograph of you as a child is your memory now. You already began to remember yourself in this other way before cyberspace came along.
But now it’s here, and everywhere,
Say a prayer and hope you don’t disappear.
